4 Great Tips For Writing Your First Resume

4 Great Tips For Writing Your First ResumeIf you are going to be applying for a job in the upcoming year, then there is absolutely no better time than now to consider and implement your first resume writing. If you are looking to switch careers to other fields or simply change from one field to another, it is a good idea to start by writing a quality resume. This will help you in getting the job you want as well as give you a leg up in the job application process. It may not be easy to identify what skills you have that will be valuable to your prospective employer. However, the best way to determine is to do some research. Many people who are seeking employment may not know exactly what they are good at. So, it is a good idea to begin to take stock of what you are good at and what you can offer the employer. While it is not uncommon for people to have a vision of their desired career before they even think about applying for a job, many people may not know what they like to do and whe re they want to work. Some may enjoy their current occupation, while others may need to learn a new skill set or learn a new skill. So, the only way to find out what your strengths and weaknesses are is to start writing a resume. Here are several tips that can help you write a quality resume:- Start with the basic information for each career. If you have three major areas of interest or specialties, this will make it easier for your potential employer to make a decision as to what field you are the best fit for. This is especially important if you have several careers in mind that you want to include on your resume.- Keep in mind that when you write about an alternate career path, there is a good chance that your current employment may require that you re-write your resume to reflect those career choices. Also, if you are unsure whether or not you want to change careers, then you should talk to your current employer and request a sample of their current resume before you begin.- You should start by asking yourself what information you will need to include on your resume. You may be surprised to learn that it is much less difficult to include this information in a sample resume than you thought. Besides, it is always nice to learn that your resume will be helping someone who is considering a career change or thinking about switching careers altogether.- When you are finished writing your best resume, then you can start the process of getting it professionally written and formatted. You may need to make several copies of your resume, but in order to get the most out of your resume, you should try to keep at least three of them. This will help to make it easier for your prospective employer to read, as well as remember you for the job.Another great way to help out your resume is to add a cover letter to your resume. You may need to tweak your cover letter a bit, but after all, this is the letter that will be mailed to the hiring manager.

How to Prepare for Your Summer Holiday

How to Prepare for Your Summer Holiday If you’ve got a summer holiday coming up, you probably want to look your absolute best. This will take a little preparation, but it’ll be worth it when you look hot by the pool or on the beach! Use this guide to prepare for your summer holiday the right way: Eat Right and Exercise Start as soon as in advance as you can when it comes to eating right and exercising. The sooner you start, the better! You don’t want to realise you have 1 week to go until holiday and starve yourself. That’s definitely not the way to go. Start at least 1 month in advance to see improvements. You should eat right 80% of the time, only allowing yourself 1 or 2 cheat meal per week. If you can eat natural foods and make sure you fill up on protein, you’ll do great! You still need carbs of course, but just make sure you keep your portion sizes under control. You can’t cut them out, as it just isn’t health. Exercise at least 3 times a week, doing something that you enjoy. You need to enjoy it or you won’t stick to it. If you can create new, healthy habits then that’s great! This should be a lifestyle forever, not just for your holiday. picture Look After Your Skin Your skin can get burned on holiday, so it’s essential you look after it. Some people like to have a few sunbed sessions before they go away to accustom their skin to the sun, but there’s no proof that this actually works. The best thing you can do is exfoliate a few times a week, and moisturise so your skin is lovely and supple. When it comes to your face, make sure you cleanse, tone, and moisturise regularly. You should use a gentle exfoliant on your face once or twice per week, and a face mask once per week. You’ll glow when you’re on the beach! Plan Hair Removal Methods Hair removal is important if you want to look and feel like a goddess while you’re away. There are lots of different methods you can use, from various home depilation methods to salon waxing treatments. It depends on your budget and how long you want the effects to last. Make sure you decide in advance and book your appointment, so you can get advice from the therapist on how to ensure your hair is in great condition for the treatment. Make sure you stick to their advice. If you have a sunbed session after a hair treatment, you could seriously burn yourself. Plan Other Beauty Treatments Plan your other beauty treatments. Work out a budget and consider what’s most important to you. You might want a nice set of HD brows, or some long, fluttery lashes. One of the best things you can do is ensure you look pretty even with no makeup on. Then you don’t have to worry at all when you’re on the beach or by the pool. How will you prepare? 2008 Personal Branding Predictions for the Future - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

2008 Personal Branding Predictions for the Future - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCNgamFg3H0] In this podcast, I touch on some trends that Ive personally seen in the workplace and throughout my personal branding studies. These are just a few of the ones currently on my mind and theres plenty more where this came from. Have a prediction of your own? Leave a comment! The rise of consultants. Personal brands within larger corporations will break off to form their own personal consulting operations. We started to see that a lot this year with social media consultants. Employees are king. The average amount of job shifts in the past few years is approximately 12 times. I see this climbing in the years to come, as there are so many opportunities and people to meet and networking tools at our disposal. Networking becomes the deciding factor for recruitment. As competition increases on both the corporate and applicant levels, you will see that if you dont know someone in a competitive field, your chances of acceptance will greatly diminish. Applicant pools will become smaller and smaller, as people will narrow down their search to align to their personal brand. This benefits both the company and person because companies wont waste time with resumes that arent a best-fit and visa versa. Educational institutions are going to start to teaching these new technologies and tools that people can leverage post graduation. I see classes teaching blogs, wikis, discussions and the rise of more virtual classrooms. Companies will be coerced to understand and promote intra-praneurship. This means that employees that have great ideas, will want to execute on them or leave. Whether it be an engineer with a new invention or a marketer with a new distribution channel (social media), companies will need to supply them with the necessary assets in order to help their careers, as well as the companys need push forward. Traditional resumes will play less of a role in job applications and interviews. They will soon evolve in form, taking into account an individuals personality, including podcasts, pictures and social elements.

Job Search from the Beginning - Recruiters Part 3 - CareerAlley

Job Search from the Beginning - Recruiters Part 3 - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. A Jedis strength flows from the Force. Yoda The job market is really starting to heat up. Not only am I receiving regular calls from recruiters, but Im also getting link requests from corporate recruiters looking for candidates. If you are not getting those calls then you are not connected. So how do you get connected? The best way (in my opinion) is to get your name out there. If you currently have a job, you need to be careful so that your current employer does not find out you are looking. Recruiters are a safe bet and one of the four legs of job search (recruiters, networking, job search sites and company career sites). Today we focus on Recruiters. Executive Recruiters: Korn/Ferry A global executive recruiter. They have numerous offices across the US and have offices in quite a few international locations as well. You can register with their site, search their site for current opportunities (and apply) or contact a consultant. The main page has Korn/Ferry info on the left hand side. Center page highlights their consultants while the right hand side of the page has some interesting articles. Click candidates on the top right hand side of the page to get started. Russell Reynolds Associates Russell Reynolds is also a global executive recruiter. Unlike Korn/Ferry, you can not search their site directly for current opportunities, but you can find a consultant and send your resume. Left hand side of the page has leadership articles while the right hand side of the page highlights their consultants. Spencer Stuart Another global executive recruiter. First page is a picture of flags / countries. Pick yours to get started. Once on your countrys page, you can register on the left hand side or check out some of the links at the top of the page. Similar to Korn/Ferry, you can register on the site as well as send your resume. There does not seem to be an option to search for current opportunities. Where to Find Other Recruiters: Want to narrow the recruiter search? Check out the resources below. Online Recruiters Directory To start, click the Jobseeker tab at the top of the page. Now you should see a search page where you can select your category (job type), Job type (retained, contingency, etc.) and country / state. Now click search recruiters and you will have your list (the good news). The bad news is that once you have your list you will need to find out their website on your own (as far as I could tell). Recruiter/Headhunter Resources, Directories Associations This is a list of lists provided by Quintcareers.com. Halfway down the page you will find a list of recruiter directories. Work your way through the list and start to build your recruiter network. Good luck in your search.Visit me on Facebook

Career Lessons From Project Runways Tim Gunn

Career Lessons From Project Runways Tim Gunn We are big fans of Project Runway in my house which prompted me to read  Tim Gunns book, Gunns Golden Rules: Lifes Lessons for Making it Work.  In the book, Gunn reveals stories of the fashion worlds greatest divas and dirt on Project Runway contestants and judges. The book outlines 18 rules for how to succeed in life and touches on the importance of good manners and hard work as a means for getting ahead. Throughout the book Gunn weaves sage advice on life and gives his readers plenty of career donts. Here are some of my favorite Gunn-isms coupled with  career advice  inspired by Gunn himself.Make it Work. This has been Gunns catchphrase on Project Runway for years. Its his reminder to the designers that they need to find solutions to their fashion dilemmas before they run out of time in the episodes fashion challenge. In the book, Gunn recalls helping a contestant thread a sewing machine and getting called out by the producer for doing so. He realized he had to let the contestant struggle with the task in order to remain impartial and keep the competition fair. The contestant had to make it work without the help of others.Career lesson.  Not every work situation is perfect; sometimes you will be thrown into situations that seem overwhelming at first. Push through and try to embrace change rather than quitting. In other words, make it work. The World Owes You Nothing. Gunn discusses the huge sense of entitlement that prevails in the  fashion industry  and shares some choice tidbits about designers behaving badly. He shares tales of a world-renowned designer making outlandish demands in a restaurant and another designer who is carried down five flights of stairs following a fashion show because she hates elevators.Career lesson.  Showing up at work doesnt mean you will be the  employee  selected for the next promotion. The notion that putting in the time leads to better positions and bigger bucks is generally a myth. Being at a certain professional level in an organization doesnt ensure that you will be there forever or that people will bend over backwards for you.Take the High Road. Gunn reveals situations where Project Runway contestants accuse each other of copying their designs. In the end, the contestants that take the high road and choose to concentrate on their work fare better than the designers who are busy pointing fingers.Career lesson.  If you are concerned that someone at work is stealing your ideas or taking advantage of the work relationship in some other way, take the high road. Keep your integrity and try to get out of the situation as soon as possible without burning bridges because you never know when you will need those bridges again.Dont Abuse Your Power or Surrender It. Gunn has quite a bit to say about bad bosses and the impact they have had on him in his lifetime. He dishes on a top producer that made people work on a 120-degree set and a top TV personality who banned Diet Coke from the set of her show.Career lesso n.  Bosses should be realistic regarding the demands they place on their employees, and they should be cognizant of the impact of poor working conditions. In addition, they need to be clear about expectations and rules so employees know when there is a performance issue. When expectations are not met there should be logical consequences.Get Inspired if it Kills You.  Gunn remembers working with design students who claimed they couldnt find inspiration for their designs. He says you can find design inspiration in everything movies, museums, books, theater, or even a quick glimpse outside your window.Career lesson.  If you lack inspiration for your work, there will always be others around you who are working hard and pushing themselves. As Gunn says, If you dont keep up, it doesnt matter how advanced you were when the race started you are not going to win it.Physical Comfort is Overrated. Gunn thinks that the concept of comfortable clothes, dress-down offices, and casual Fridays is totally overrated. He believes that if you are in clothes that are as comfortable as your pajamas, you cant be engaged in the world of work the way you need to be. He talks about mothers who have impeccably dressed children but take little to no care in dressing themselves. He notes, If you see your family as a brand, are you not a brand ambassador?Career lesson.  The way you choose to dress sends a message to others and it is an integral part of your professional brand. Remember that the next time you reach for a pair of sweatpants.Use Technology; Dont Let it Use You. Gunn makes some great points about technology and how some people hide behind technology to take care of things that should be taken care of in person. His rules include, You can promote an employee via e-mail, but you cant fire him, and You can ask someone out by e-mail, but you cant break up with her.Career lesson.  Technology can be leveraged to help employees complete certain tasks smarter, faster, and more effici ently. But it is not the right medium for every task. Certain transactions require a personal touch. Your fingers cant always do the walking when you are trying to build meaningful and trusting relationships. Sometimes its better to pick up the phone or meet face to face.
